Life of Sarla Devi: Lover of Mahatma Gandhi

Sarla was neice of Ravindra N Tagore. Her husband and Sunil Dutt were Pb Mohyals. Gandhi’s one love letter of Feb 1940 and her husband’s life sketch are also in this blog. Rahul follows Nehru Gandhi!

After Nehru’s love affairs with Lady Edwina Mountbatten now grand son of Mahatma Gandhi has disclosed the lover affairs of Mahatma Gandhi with Bengali Sarla Devi married with another freedom fighter editor of Hindustan journal of Lahore

Sarla Devi has a son named Deepak Chaudhary. Mahatma Gandhi proposed to Pt Nehru for the marriage of Deepak with Indira. But Nehru rejected the proposal. Later Deepak Chaudhary married with a daughter of Mahatma Gandhi.

Chaudhary Ram Bhaj Datt, husband of Sarla Devi was a respected personality known in Arya Samaj, Congress, and Journalists. He was related to famous Mohyal Tree of Punjab and Haryana. Names of Late Sunil Dutt and his wife Nargis are also included in the website of this society in golden words.

When he was in Jail then Mahatama Gandhi was in his home as a host of her wife. Chaudhuri was in jail for his part in the struggle against the British and soon after he arrived, Gandhi - by now dedicated to personal celibacy - wrote in a letter: "Saraladevi's company is very endearing... She looks after me very well." Photo of Sarla Devi is at:www.newsanalysisindia.com/
Within months, he was thinking of their relationship in terms of a "spiritual marriage", according to his grandson - who admits he is unsure what his grandfather meant by this. Does Domestic Violence Act (D V Act) give remedy to the husbands as Chaudhari?

At the age of 50, Gandhi, a married father of four, came perilously close to succumbing to a temptation that threatened both his family, and his life's work, after falling passionately in love with the beautiful Saraladevi Chaudhuri, three years his junior

Neither Mahatma Gandhi nor Sarla Devi wrote about their love affairs in their autobiographies.

Author Rajmohan Gandhi writes in his new book:”He responded to my father Devdas and letters written to him by the other leaders, especially by Rajagopalachari asking him to come out of the affair.”

Romantic letters
“While her husband, appointed the last viceroy of India, hammered out the terms of India's independence and partition, she experienced a passionate union of souls with Nehru, the great unfulfilled love of her life.
Mahatma Gandhi had also written so many so called spiritual love letters to Sarla Devi. I found the copy of one of those letters:

343. LETTER TO SARLA DEVI1
February 1, 1940
MY DEAR SARLA,
Take a few minutes tonight after prayer.
Love.

Rajmohan Gandhi felt that ‘It is not only a great injustice but it is completely incorrect. When Gandhi actually did fall for Saraladevi he was 50 and she was 47. When he visited the Jalianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar to study what had happened and to know about the repression that had taken place, Saraladevi was also in Punjab to get the public to fight the repression.
“She was the hostess where he stayed. Her husband was in prison at the time. During those few months in the early 1920’s, Gandhi fell for Saraladevi in a big way. However, he broke the relationship. There was an aesthetic element in that relationship and might even have been a mild erotic element too. There was an emotional element in the relationship. But Gandhi’s own reflections aided by very strong words from his son (my father), from his secretary Mahadev Desai and from the future father-in law of his son, C Raja Gopalachari, who wrote a strong letter, only made Gandhi realise that he was on the wrong track. He broke the relationship.”
She was greatly wounded when he broke that relationship. There was no sex in that relationship but there was a romance in that relationship. Gandhi had a fantasy that the two together might do something for India, but afterwards he ended that relationship. In having that relationship he showed humanity and in breaking that relationship he showed his toughness and his Mahatmahood.

On Jan 7, 2007 Sonia launched a new biography of 'real' Mahatma Gandhi written by his grand son Rajmohan Gandhi who teaches at the University of Illinois. Now it is clear that there are real and duplicate Gandhis in Hindustan.

"I was lucky to have the family connection, the blood connection. The Sarla Devi incident was not a secret, it was published in my The Good Boatman 10 years ago. So to imagine that suddenly I have plucked something out of the closet is a gross exaggeration," says Rajmohan Gandhi.

With Gandhigiri in 2006 and three books in 2007, it certainly looks like Gandhi is back in fashion.
"These days a film has brought into parlance a word, which is Gandhigiri, that also has a positive connotation, it's intended for the common man," said senior BJP leader, L K Advani.

Saraladevi Chaudhari (1872-1945) writer, social worker and nationalist, was born on 9 September 1872 at Jorasanko in Kolkata. Her father, Janakinath Ghosal, was a founder member of the Congress and her mother was swarna kumari devi.

Poet, playwright, lyricist, journalist, social worker, was born into the illustrious Tagore family of Jorasanko, being Debendranath's 10th child and sister of rabindranath tagore. She was educated at home according to the custom of the day and was married at the age of 12 to Janakiram Ghosal, a deputy magistrate.

She composed a famous song "Kadi Nahin Harna, Bhaven Sadi Jan Jave"; (We shall never given in even if we have to die); participated in the non-cooperation movement and Khila fat movement; d. 1923.

At BethuneSchool kamini roy and Lady Abala Bose were among her classmates. Saraladevi stood first in the Entrance examination (1886), and passed BA with honours in English (1890). She was proficient in French, sanskrit and persian. She was married in 1905 to Rambhuj Dutta Chaudhuri, lawyer, leader of the Punjab Arya Samaj and editor of the journal ‘Hindustan’ (Lahore). She taught at the Maharani Girls' School in Mysore. She was involved in a variety of ways with the nationalist movement of the times.

Sonia Gandhi and PM Manmohan were underground on Sept 7 ‘Vandematram day’ to honor the nation.. Smt. Sarla Devi Chaudharani, niece of Rabindranath Tagore sang Vande Mataram at the Benares Congress Session in 1905 despite the ban on its singing by the British Government.

She helped Jatindranath Bandyopadhyay to form a revolutionary group, and she took active part in the swadeshi movement, founding Laksmir Bhandar (1904), which propagated the use of hand-woven textiles. But in the book of 10 Janpath loyalists, there is no space for revolutionaries. They count India from Indira to Rahul at present.

Father of Sarla Devi belonged to the progressive part of ‘bhadralok’ society in Calcutta. So he had encouraged his wife to discard purdah and pursue writing and social work. Sarla Devi also followed her father after marriage in Punjab. She took the initiative to spread education among Punjabi women in purda. The Bharat-Stri-Mahamandal was founded through her efforts. There is an article of Taslima Nasrin at outlook titled “Let’s burn the burqa”.

In Kolkata, Saraladevi founded the Bharat-Stri-Shiksa-Sadan and introduced games with swords and batons among women. Her involvement in nationalist politics brought her in contact with Lala Lajpat Ray, Gopal Krishna Gokhle, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Gandhi. Now except Gandhi no other are in the memory of 10 Janpath Gandhis.

Though she had founded the Theosophical Society, in later years she turned religious, becoming a disciple of Guru Bijoy Krishna Dev Sharma.

Apart from writing, Saraladevi also edited a number of journals. When her husband was in jail, she edited the Journal ‘Hindustan’ and launched its English edition. For a long time she helped edit the ‘bharati’. Among her important publications are Nababarser Svapna, Jibaner Jharapata, Banalir Pitrdhan (1903), Bharat Stri Mahamandal (1911). Saraladevi died on 18 August 1945.

Ch. Ram Bhaj Datt (1866-1924) son of Ch. Radhe Krishal1 Datt was born in Kanjrur.
He belongs to Mohyals. .The Mohyals are very proud of their seven castes and the number seven has a special connotation for them. It signifies the seven days of the week, seven Devas of the Hindu pantheon, Seven Wonders of the World, seven notes of the musical scale, seven primary colours of the rainbow, sapIa chakras of the Kundalini, sapla-pacli or the seven steps as part of the marriage ritual and seven petals of the Lotus Flowerthe seat of the meditating Buddha.
Seven castes are Balis, Bhimwals, Chibers, Datts, Laus, Mohans and Vaids.

After graduation from the F.C. College Lahore in 1888 he passed his Law degree and started practice first in Tarn Taran and later shifted to Lahore. In early age, he came under the influence of Kooka Guru Ram Singh and virtually became a Sikh but later he became a zealous follower of the Arya Samaj. He attended all sessions of the Congress since 1888 and was close to revolutionaries like Sardar Ajit Singh (uncle of Bhagat Singh), Lala Lajpat Rai, Lala Har Kishan Lal and Master Amir Chand.

He led relief work at the time of Kangra earthquake. He was at the height of his popularity in 1919, addressing speeches in Bradlaugh Hall and leading processions during the civil dis-obedience movement. After the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, he was imprisoned under Defence of India Rules and lodged in Dera Ismail Khan jail and his property was confiscated. He took active part in the Khilafat movement initiated by Gandhiji.

He also launched two newspapers, an Urdu Daily and. th_ Hindustan Weekly. Brought up in liberal tradition of the Brahmo SamaJ he married Sarla Devi, the niece of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, being the daughter of his elder sister Swaranlata Devi. It was a high drama involving the petite Bengali mistress and the dapper Mohyal he-man. She was known as Sarla Devi Chaudhrani and was very proud of her Mohyal connection. The doughty Ram Bhaj Dalt, donning his embroidered tunic, looked like an epic character. He also served as editor of the Mohyal Mitter during his association with the General Mohyal Sabha. His son Deepak Datt Chaudhary was also a noted Barrister pandit Nanak Chand Datt, the eminent Barrister of Lahore, was a champion of the freedom struggle and the Arya Samaj cause.

Gandhi

As of Now, I believe Gandhi was a great man, and definitely a great pacifist leader. But in this blog I would write
from a neutral view. I was trying to find out why Gandhi adopted Feroz Khan, and I got this link to a website which links about Nehru's sex life. And, I went to read all this.
Interesting Read.
